If you are a model or an actor, you know how important comp cards are in your career. Comp cards or composite cards are a significant marketing tool of actors and models because these are representations of themselves. In essence, these comp cards showcase their portfolio of images and primary personal information. Also, these cards stand as the models’ business card. There are around five pictures in a model’s comp card. The basic stats of the model, such as height and weight, also go with these. Both panels of the comp card are usually printed and its height does not go beyond ten inches, and the width, seven inches.

Truly, there are countless models all over the world who have gone into comp card printing. Comp cards are considered effective and cost-efficient marketing weapons because they are not even that expensive to produce. Moreover, through them, models are able to introduce themselves to prospective clients in a creative and professional manner. Are you aware that there are actually three types of people who believe in the value of comp cards? As you read this article, know why comp card printing is a must for every model or actor to be a hit in their profession.

You may already have realized that comp cards are printed by models to promote themselves to people who could give them work. These people are basically called agents. When there is an open call, the agent has to meet the models. During this meeting, the models present their portfolio to the agent and get interviewed. Open calls are very quick meetings; thus models essentially lack the time to flaunt and market themselves. However, models can always leave their comp cards to the agent after the interview. When the open call is over, agents take the time to talk and discuss about the results of the event. This is when comp cards become very important. The moment the agents have to pick the models they like, the comp cards will guide them in their decision. Therefore, if you seriously want to land the job, make sure you produce remarkable and professional-looking comp cards.

So now, the agent has your comp card. Once the agent has chosen the best models, he/she is now duty-bound to start marketing these models. Have you noticed how modeling agencies put on view the comp cards of their models in their workplace? Typically, these comp cards are displayed on the walls. The main intention of this is to present the models of the agency to any prospective client who comes into the office. Moreover, it helps the agency to market their models quicker. This, however, is not the key strategy of agents to promote their models. Although this may be effective, there is another noteworthy way of advertising. Essentially, agents send out these comp cards to another important crowd. This group includes photographers, movie producers and people in the magazine industry. This third group of people significantly need these comp cards as well.

Finally, the third type of people who consider comp card printing a crucial endeavor are the real clients. The moment they get these comp cards, they could freely choose the models they desire. It is therefore very significant that agents impressively promote the models they handle. This would have a say on who the client chooses in the end. When the client has made a choice, he/she will now have to meet the models face to face. If models were able to exceptionally present themselves through comp card printing, clients would definitely be very enthusiastic to meet them in person. Meanwhile, on the part of the client, it is equally important that they store a listing of all the comp cards sent their way. In the future, when they have a need for a certain type or class of model, all they need to do is refer to this listing. Here you will realize the sheer importance of printing distinct and attention-grabbing comp cards.

Truly, comp cards are a noteworthy advertising material for all those models and actors out there who aim to succeed in their profession. If you are one of these models or actors, what’s keeping you from starting your comp card printing now?

Compiling a model portfolio

By: Arthur Mavericck

About the Author

Compiling and putting up a perfect model portfolio is an asset that many models should put a lot of effort into. Teen models should therefore make the those right first steps by making those great portfolios now.

(ArticlesBase SC #907976)

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Compiling a model portfolio

The portfolio is one of the most important assets of a model, especially those aspiring teen models because this could help them jump-start their professional modeling career. Without the portfolio, models would have a very difficult time finding work or finding the agents and clients who will help and guide them in the career path that they would like to take. When it comes to modeling, the model portfolio serves as the resume that showcases the model’s body, posture, stance, and sometimes even the minutest details of their body parts. Putting together a portfolio is probably one of the most important aspects of a model’s life.

Putting together and compiling a model portfolio is not an easy task. Teen models, especially those who are just starting out, should remember that their portfolio should be decent and professional looking. Models must make great first impressions on their clients and agents, and the only way to do this is by giving them impressive portfolios. The portfolio must also be appropriate for the job, for the promotion, or campaign that the company is launching or promoting. Models must set their standards high and develop a very critical eye in selecting photos for their portfolio. They should be able to convince their prospective clients and agents that they have what it takes to help them endorse or advertise their products to the public and win their targeted market.

There are many things that one will need in compiling a portfolio. Of course, the most basic is getting yourself a competitive photographer who will know how to take the best photos of you. One will also need a great collection of outfits and costumes or attire plus the needed accessories. A good combination of these things plus some creativity and one should be on his way to creating an amazing model portfolio. However, before attempting to put together a portfolio, it is important for models, teen models and adult models alike, to know the type of modeling that he or she is going into. Glamour models should be glamorous in their portfolio, while alternative models should highlight their unique features that set them apart from the regular or normal ones.

For teen models who are only starting out, they can find some help when they refer to photos in other print media such as magazines, newspapers, or billboards and use them as guides for the types of images that they want to portray and include in their portfolio. This will also help them choose the right genre of modeling that they would like to focus their modeling career on.

Once the photos have been taken, these aspiring teen models have to review them and pick out the best there is. They have to remember that modeling agents and clients are very meticulous when it comes to details so if you want to have an edge over your competitors, teen models like you need to make sure that their model portfolio is nothing but a portfolio that gleams of excellence and perfection.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Comp Card Printing In A Nutshell

Nowadays, most people have realized the importance of sending out cards to establish or maintain good relationships with family, friends and co-workers. Ordinarily, you give away cards to express or relay a certain message to other people. These cards become your creative venue of communicating your emotions if you could not express them personally to a certain person. Truly, cards are a great and extraordinary manner of sending a part of yourself to other people. These days, there are so many cards printed, utilized and sent out to people all over the world. And in case you do not know, one of these more popular cards at the moment are composite cards. Composite cards are more famously known by its “nickname”: comp cards.

Surely, a lot of people these days have gone into comp card printing – majority, if not all of them, are actors and models. Fundamentally, comp cards are used by models and actors to advertise and promote themselves to clients or modeling agencies who could give them a job. These cards essentially hold the model’s profile information as well as portfolio of photos. These cards may also serve as business cards which shall publicize the models’ existence in the industry.

Did you know that comp cards are also known as zed cards? Here is a story. In the 1960′s, a certain Peter Marlowe first began publishing models’ basic information. Marlowe belonged to the plush fashion world of London during that time. What he initiated eventually progressed when other companies followed. They also started printing models’ cards. The thing was, Marlowe registered the cards he produced under a specific name. So when the others imitated him, they also registered their cards under the names they preferred. It was through this that Sebastian Sed got his cards named under him. Eventually, his sed cards became known as zed cards. This story gave way to the term “zed cards” which also generally refer to comp cards.

Let us talk about the usefulness of comp cards. I have mentioned earlier that comp cards are models and actors’ main tool in marketing themselves to potential clients and agencies. The great benefit that one could experience from comp card printing is that you let more people know about you, specifically people who would have a need for a model or actor like you. In effect, you are guaranteed of a modeling or acting job from these people or companies.

Nevertheless, comp card printing can be a taxing endeavor. For one to be able to produce comp cards, he/she has to have basic knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and InDesign, examples of software applications that are primarily used for this purpose. But if you really do not possess the skill, there are a lot of expert graphic artists out there who can design your comp cards for you. Here are certain things you must know about the photos and images that your comp cards should contain:

Keep in mind that your photos and images are one of the most significant features of your comp cards. Prior to your comp card printing, see to it you have prepared all the images that you plan to use in your comp cards. When you already have these photos with you, check out their quality and resolution. Your comp cards need high-quality images to become remarkable and professional-looking. You could also choose to produce larger comp cards but this can certainly cause the quality of your images to diminish. In effect, you might not be able to print comp cards effectively. Once you have made a quality check, it is time for you to refine and enhance your images for better-looking and more impressive comp cards.

Indeed if you are a novice in the modeling or acting industry, comp card printing might sound nerve-racking for you. But if you are properly armed with the right tools and knowledge, your comp cards could certainly become a tangible reality that would be your access to the ramp or camera.

Some cool headshots images:

Sophia headshot
headshots

Why have I found headshots so difficult? They’re dead simple — and yet I couldn’t get the hang until I made two changes that led to this shot, which I like. (bigger image) (We used it to get Sophia a role as a extra in this Gogol Bordello video shoot.)

First I read Joe McNally’s fabulous "The Moment It Clicks," where he suggests making a clamshell from two lights, one under the model’s face and one over it (page 56). I don’t have softboxes, so I substituted my cheap umbrellas. (Here’s the whole setup, though Sophia’s face was actually closer to the camera and umbrellas than in that photo.)

The other smart thing I finally did was switch everything to manual. With only a few test shots, I found exactly what manual settings worked best for the three flashes (the lower flash, it turns out, should be at about half the power of the upper) and the camera.

I’m using Nikon’s Commander mode wireless system with two SB-600s and an SB-800, setting the flashes’ power in my D300′s menus — if I remember, the flash above is at 1/16, the one below is at 1/32. The camera is at f/1.4, 1/160 sec, ISO 200. Though I’ve got the Nikon 28mm f/1.4 and the Sigma 30mm f/1.4, for this I used my Nikon 50mm f/1.4 in order to go slightly tele.

If I’d had one more flash, I would have set it up behind her to give some rim lighting to her hair.

For some reason, I’ve been struggling with the TTL flash settings, which led to unpredictable results. Now that I’ve finally experimented with manual settings, I’m hooked.

I’m sure the longer I work with manual, the fewer test shots it will take me.

Final note: when you work with a child model, you can skip the step in Photoshop where you smooth the skin and eliminate blemishes and pores!
